HARRISONBURG, Va. – A total of 11 former James Madison student-athletes across seven teams are currently competing in training camps with hopes of earning roster spots for the 2021 National Football League season.
Â
Three former Dukes are currently with the defending world champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Offensive linemen Aaron Stinnie and Josh Wells won the Super Bowl last season, while safety Raven Greene joined the team during the offseason.
Â
Two former All-Americans are in their second year with the Dallas Cowboys in quarterback Ben DiNucci and defensive lineman Ron'Dell Carter, while a pair of former safeties in Dean Marlowe and D'Angelo Amos are in their first season with the Detroit Lions.
Â
JMU's other four NFL Dukes include tight end Daniel Brown (New York Jets), defensive lineman John Daka (Los Angeles Rams), wide receiver Ishmael Hyman (Carolina Panthers) and cornerback Jimmy Moreland (Washington Football Team).
Â
Wells is the veteran of the group, entering his eighth season in the league. Both Brown and Marlowe are just a year back of Wells, preparing for their seventh year in the NFL.
Â
Each NFL franchise will select 53 players for the active roster while placing 16 others on the practice squad. That is a change from the previous rule of 12 from past years.
Â
In addition to players, JMU also has three former players on NFL coaching staffs this season. They include Chicago Bears pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Denver Broncos offensive quality control coach Justin Rascati and Pittsburgh Steelers assistant wide receivers coach Blaine Stewart.
