CHICAGO, Ill. – James Madison senior defensive lineman Mike Greene was one of 35 returning defenders who were chosen to the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Buck Buchanan Award Watch List.
Â
The Buck Buchanan Award is presented annually to the national defensive player of the year in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.
Â
A 2020 Buchanan Award finalist and Colonial Athletic Association Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Greene tallied 25 tackles with 10.5 for loss and 3.0 sacks this past spring. The Richmond, Va., native led the CAA in tackles for loss and ranked eighth in sacks on his way to earning First Team All-America laurels from Stats Perform, the Associated Press, Athlon Sports and HERO Sports. He was also voted Division I Defensive Lineman of the Year from the Touchdown Club of Richmond.
Â
More players can earn their way onto the watch list during the regular season, and a national media panel will select the winner after the regular season concludes. First awarded in 1995, two Dukes have won the Buchanan Award previously, as Derrick Lloyd claimed it in 2000 and Arthur Moats took home the honor in 2009. JMU is one of seven schools to produce multiple Buchanan winners. They have also produced five finalists since the 2017 season.
Â
Greene and the Dukes open the 2021 season, presented by CarMax, on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they host Morehead State in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Bridgeforth Stadium.
