HARRISONBURG, Va. – With the beginning of the Major League Baseball postseason, it is time to take a look back at how former James Madison players fared in roles on and off the field during the 2022 season.

A trio of Dukes on team during the spring found themselves in the professional ranks through the MLB Draft and the Frontier League. Two-way player
Chase DeLauter was drafted 16
th overall by the Cleveland Guardians, the highest overall draft pick in program history. Middle infielder
Nick Zona was drafted in the 20
th round by the Seattle Mariners, making 10 at bats and scoring a run as part of Seattle's rookie affiliate team. Right-handed pitcher
Justin Showalter signed with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League during their late season run. He went 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA in 29.2 innings across five starts while striking out 16.

Kevin Kelly began the season with Cleveland's Double-A affiliate, the Akron Rubberducks, before being promoted to Triple-A Columbus a month and a half into the season. Between the two levels in the 2022 season, the right hander went 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA with four saves. He made 48 appearances, including one start, across 57.1 innings and struck out 75 while holding opposing hitters to a .194 batting average.

Similar to Kelly, Nick Robertson began the season in Double-A in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before being promoted during the season to Triple-A. Starting with the Tulsa Drillers, he joined the Oklahoma City Dodgers in September. Robertson earned one win and nine saves between the two leagues, posting a 4.43 ERA and tossing 67 innings across 53 appearances with two starts. He added 87 strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .240.

Shelton Perkins pitched for the Bowie Baysox, the Baltimore Orioles' Double-A affiliate team. He made 28 appearances out of the bullpen, earning a win and making three saves while recording a 3.28 ERA in 35.2 innings. The righty tossed 37 strikeouts and held opposing batters to a .173 clip.

Kyle Hayes signed with the Columbia Fireflies in 2022, the Single-A Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. He recorded 10 hits, including two home runs, as he scored five runs and had eight RBI's. In the field, the backstop caught eight runners attempting to steal.

The 2022 season saw
Fox Semones bounce around the professional ranks, beginning the season with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League before having his contract bought by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The utility player then spent time at Arizona's rookie and Single-A affiliates until ending the year with the Hillsboro Hops, Arizona's High-A affiliate. Overall, Semones batted .228 with four home runs, five doubles, 15 runs scored and 24 RBI's.

 Jeff Garber concluded year number 14 with the Washington Nationals, being named the Assistant Field Coordinator for their farm system. In total, the farm system won a combined 228 games on the year with the Fredericksburg Nationals finishing second in the Carolina League at the end of the regular season.

Serving as the pitching coach for the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Dan Meyer helped lead the team to 74 wins. The pitching staff combined for a 4.58 ERA and tied for the sixth best opposing batting average across the International League at .243. The Indians ultimately finished fourth in the West Division of the league.

Lorenzo Bundy led the Winston-Salem Dash to 25 wins in his first season as manager of the team. The Dash serve as the Chicago White Sox's High-A affiliate.

As the manager of the Fredericksburg Nationals for its second season, Jake Lowery led the team to a 76-57 record and a second-place finish in the Carolina League after the conclusion of the regular season. The FredNats scored the most runs in the league and made it all the way to the final game of the North Divisional Championship series.
