FOLEY, Ala. – The James Madison defense suffocated a Texas State attack, producing its 12
th shutout of the season to set the single-season program record for shutouts in the 1-0 win on Wednesday night at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in the Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Quarterfinal.
The Dukes move to 11-3-5 and advance to a conference semifinal match for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Bobcats drop to 12-5-2.
Sophomore
Amanda Attanasi scored the deciding goal for the Dukes, taking a career-high seven shots. Redshirt junior
Alexandra Blom made two saves in goal for her eighth shutout of the season, setting the junior class record for individual shutouts in a season.
How It Happened
- The JMU attack dominated the first half, outshooting Texas State 11-3.
- In the 30th minute, redshirt junior Suwaibatu Mohammed had a chance to give the Dukes the lead, but Texas State goalkeeper Katelyn Chrisman made a jumping save to keep the match scoreless.
- The Dukes pressured at the end of the half, getting off three shots from Attanasi and freshmen Jamie Swartz and Y-Von Nguyen all within the last minute.
- The beginning of the second half was a Attanasi and Mohammed show, with the two taking the first three shots of the half.
- Attanasi found the back of the net in the 57th minute, netting her eighth goal of the season to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead. It is the most goals for a Duke since Ginger Deel's eight goals in the 2019 season and Mohammed was given the assist for the first of her career.
- Texas State's lone opportunity on goal in the last 45 minutes of the half occurred in the 78th minute to equalize, but Blom showed why she was named the Sun Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and made the save.
Game Notes
- Every shot taken by JMU in the second half was from Attanasi or Mohammed.
- JMU's 16 shots tied a season-high, matching the shot output the Dukes had against Georgia State.
