HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball has announced its 2023 schedule, one that will see the Dukes compete in the Sun Belt Conference for the first time, as unveiled by Head Coach
Marlin Ikenberry on Monday morning.
The 56-game slate will see the Dukes play 27 games at Veterans Memorial Park while facing off against eight teams that played in last season's NCAA tournament, with three of the eight finishing inside the final top 25 poll.
"We are very excited to play in the Sun Belt Conference this season," Ikenberry said. "Our non-conference schedule is very challenging and will prepare us for league play."
For the second straight season, the Dukes will open up their campaign with a three-game series at Florida State from Feb. 17-19. JMU will only travel for one more non-conference weekend, taking on USC Upstate on March 10-12, as they return from the Sunshine State and open up a 10-game homestand. The stretch will see the Dukes host Cornell (Feb.24-28) and UMass Lowell (March 3-5) for three-game sets, while playing George Mason (Feb.21), George Washington (Feb. 28), VMI (March 7) and VCU (March 8) in midweek bouts.
Once the squad returns from Spartanburg, S.C., they will make the return trips to VCU and VMI on March 14 and 15, respectively. The midweek contests are the first two of eight road midweeks in 2023, with five of the eight as part of home-and-homes. In addition to VCU and VMI, the Dukes will take on in-state foes Radford (away March 21, home April 12) and ACC champion Virginia Tech (away April 25, home May 16), while also returning the trip to George Washington on March 28.
The three additional road midweeks will be at Richmond on April 4, at Maryland on April 19 and at Virginia on May 3, the first time the Dukes will face the Hoos since 2019.
The Dukes will open up Sun Belt Conference play on March 17-19 as they host Coastal Carolina, the first time JMU will face the Chanticleers since they were defending national champions in 2017. VMP will host three more league series, welcoming former Colonial Athletic Association foe George State (April 6-8), defending Sun Belt champion Louisiana (April 21-23) and in-state rival Old Dominion (May 12-14).
JMU's first road Sun Belt series will be on March 24-26 against Arkansas State before facing South Alabama (March 31-April 2), Southern Miss (April 14-16), App State (April 28-30), Marshall (May 5-7) and capping off the regular season at Georgia Southern (May 18-20).
The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship will be held in Montgomery, Ala. From May 23-28 at Riverwalk Stadium.
