Steinberg’s Solo Shot Difference Maker in Dukes Win Against Quinnipiac
3/5/2022 6:18:00 PM | Baseball
The Dukes now move to 7-4 while the Bobcats drop to 2-6.
Redshirt sophomore Hunter Entsminger earned the win, after going 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, while redshirt junior Lliam Grubbs picked up his first save of the season. Sophomore Joe Vogatsky started and tossed a career-high seven strikeouts. Freshman Fenwick Trimble led the Dukes at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored, two doubles, and two RBI's.
How It Happened
The Dukes got on the board first in the first on a fielder's choice after redshirt junior Trevon Dabney led off by getting hit by a pitch and moving to third on a single. Classmate Kyle Novak then shot a grounder to short that scored Dabney for a 1-0 lead.
Vogatsky got in a groove early, retiring the first five batters all on strikes. Quinnipiac was able to tie the game in the fourth on a bases loaded hit by pitch to make it 1-1. They then scored three more times in the fifth to make it 4-1 on a wild pitch, an RBI single, and a three-base fielding error.
The Dukes responded by redshirt sophomore leading off the fifth inning with a triple and scoring the next at bat on a grounder by Novak. A Trimble double then scored redshirt junior junior Carson Bell, with Trimble advancing to third on an overthrow at the plate. Trimble then tied the game when he scored on redshirt junior Jensen Lapoint's single down the right field line.
JMU retook the lead in the seventh, as Matt DeLuca came in to relieve Bobcats starter Kevin Seitter and gave up a leadoff solo home run to Steinberg that would give JMU a 5-4 lead. Trimble knocked in an insurance run to make it 6-4 on a sacrifice fly after Bell singled, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and then stole third.
Grubbs, who was named to the Stopper of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season. The save is the eighth of his career, moving him into sole possession of tenth in the program all time ranks.
