HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball fell, 9-2, in the regular season finale against UNCW on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park. Seniors from the baseball and softball programs were honored pregame as part of Senior Day.
The Dukes end their season at 27-26, 12-11 while UNCW heads into the CAA Tournament at 31-22, 15-9.
Graduate student
Justin Showalter started for JMU, going 5.1 innings and striking out four while giving up five runs. Redshirt junior
Kyle Novak led the squad at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles.
How It Happened
The visitors were able to get on top early, pushing four runs across through the first four innings. The Dukes were able to get a runner on in their half of each of those innings, but were not able to bring anyone around. That streak ended in the fifth inning, as freshman
Coleman Calabrese doubled with two outs and came around to score on a single off the bat of redshirt junior
Trevon Dabney to make it 4-1.
UNCW responded quickly, getting the run back to push the lead to four in the sixth inning. The Seahawks then added a pair of runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 7-1.
The Dukes once again were able to get a run back, this time in the eighth. Novak hit his second double of the game and came home two batters later on a single from classmate
Travis Reifsnider to make it 7-2. UNCW would respond with two runs in the ninth to push the lead to 9-2, which they would hold on for the win.
