CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – James Madison dominated the major awards for the 2022 Virginia Sports Information Directors University Division Women's Lacrosse All-State Team, as
Isabella Peterson was voted VaSID Player of the Year,
Mairead Durkin was named Defensive Player of the Year and
Shelley Klaes took home Coach of the Year honors.

This is Peterson's second straight major award from VaSID, as she was 2021 Rookie of the Year. Durkin becomes the second straight JMU player to win VaSID Defensive Player of the Year, joining
Emma Johnson's honor last season. Klaes is the most decorated winner by VaSID, as she claimed her second straight Coach of the Year and the sixth in her career.

JMU led the Commonwealth with six All-State selections, with three earning First Team accolades and three more being recognized on the Second Team. Joining Peterson and Durkin on the All-State First Team was
Molly Dougherty. Second Team awards went to
Katie Checkosky,
Taylor Marchetti and
Rachel Matey.

Peterson dominated for the JMU offense this year and was honored as a Tewaaraton Award nominee while earning Third Team All-America accolades from both the IWLCA and ILWomen, as well as honorable mention status by USA Lacrosse Magazine. The CAA Player of the Year led the Dukes with 72 goals to go with 15 assists for 87 points. She ranked eighth in Division I in goals per game (3.79), 13th in free-position percentage (.636) and 34th in shot percentage (.537). Peterson also led the league in draw controls with 102, which ranked third in JMU single-season history. A five-time CAA Player of the Week, she tied the single-game program records for goals (8) and points (10) at Hofstra back in early April. This is also Peterson's second straight year earning First Team All-State laurels.

Durkin was a IWLCA Second Team All-American and a Third Team All-American by both ILWomen and USA Lacrosse Magazine after breaking the JMU single-season caused turnovers record. The CAA Defensive Player of the Year finished with 52, as her 2.74 per games ranked fourth nationally. She had a JMU-record eight caused turnovers with seven ground balls in the NCAA first-round victory against UConn. She also ranked third in the CAA with 2.37 ground balls per game and caused three or more turnovers in nine outings. This is Durkin's second straight year on the All-State Team, earning Second Team honors in 2021.

Klaes guided JMU to a 14-5 record and to its program-record seventh straight NCAA Championship appearance this past season. The Dukes won an NCAA tournament game for the fourth time in the past five tournaments as well. JMU won the CAA regular-season title after going 6-0 in conference play and put together an 11-game win streak after a 3-4 start to the year. The Dukes captured five top-25 wins, including a marquee triumph at #3 Maryland.

Dougherty is the first lacrosse player in VaSID history to earn five First Team All-State honors after another solid season in net. An Honorable Mention All-American by ILWomen, Dougherty was voted CAA Goalkeeper of the Year and earned a spot on the Tewaaraton Watch List. She finished the year with a 9.95 goals against average to go with a .460 save percentage and 145 total saves. JMU's seventh all-time leader in career saves (472), she ranked 12th nationally in GAA and 26th in save percentage.

Checkosky wrapped up her career as one of the program's all-time leaders in assists, finishing with 107 to rank tied for third at JMU. She had 45 this season alone, which ranked third in JMU single-season history and was eighth-best in the NCAA. Checkosky added eight goals to tally 53 points in 2022. She also accrued five assists three times.

Marchetti was a Second Team All-CAA honoree after scoring 31 goals to lead all JMU midfielders. She also added five assists and 20 draw controls. Marchetti registered hat tricks in four consecutive games, which included a career-best four tallies against UConn in the NCAA first round.

Matey was a First Team All-CAA honoree after collecting 93 draw controls, 24 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls for 142 hustle stats. Her draw-control total ranked second in the CAA only to Peterson and fourth in JMU single-season history. She also ranked second as well on the team in caused turnovers. Back in early April at Hofstra, she set a career-high with 11 draws, just one shy of the program record. Entering her final season next year, she ranks second at JMU in career draw controls (197). Matey is now a three-time All-State honoree joining her 2021 Second Team selection and 2020 First Team nod.

Following JMU's six selections were Virginia and Richmond with four apiece. All of U.Va.'s selections were First Team members to lead the state. Virginia Tech and Liberty each had three selections, while Old Dominion and George Mason had one.
