NEW ORLEANS – James Madison women's soccer defender Brittany Munson was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor for the second time in as many weeks, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
JMU picked up a pair of wins during the week to move to 3-0-1 on the season, their best start to a season since 2007. It first took down Charlotte, 1-0, before upending La Salle, 2-0.
Â
Munson helped anchor a backline that has now posted four straight shutouts to open up the season, tying the program record for consecutive shutouts at any point in the season. The feat has been accomplished twice, first in 2005 and most recently in 2018. JMU is the only team out of the Sun Belt that has not conceded a goal this season.
Â
Against Charlotte, Munson helped hold Charlotte to only five shots throughout the entirety of the match. The 49ers' three shots on goal were their lowest output in seven games stretching back to last season, as the Dukes were also able to keep them to four corner kicks.
Â
To close out the week, Munson and the Dukes traveled to previously unbeaten La Salle and prevailed over the Explorers. The Merrick, N.Y. native played all 90 minutes and was key in not allowing the hosts to have good looks at the goal.
Â
The Dukes close out a four-match road trip by traveling to No. 5 Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 1. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
