HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison was held to one shot as the Dukes were shut out by Old Dominion, 3-0, at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
JMU sits at 3-11 with three games remaining in the regular season. ODU moves to 11-5 (5-1 BIG East) and will take on conference foe UConn on Friday, Oct. 27.

Katie Fricke logged 40 minutes in net, making a career-high seven saves and allowing just one goal. Starting in cage was senior
Brandelynn Heinbaugh,
who registered four stops on the afternoon.
Marlon De Bruijne struck twice for the Monarchs, while Rina Tsioles recorded a pair of assists. Also earning points in the win was Ulichney with a goal and Frederique Zandbergen with an assist.
How It Happened
- ODU scored just over five minutes into the contest with a tip-in from Ulichney off a shot from Tsioles.
- Near the top of the circle, de Bruijne struck with a backhanded shot at the 12:45 mark of the second quarter to make it 2-0 Monarchs.
- Early in the third quarter, Old Dominion took advantage of a penalty corner to score its third and final goal, as de Bruijne sent one to the bottom right corner.
Game Notes
- The Monarchs held the advantage in shots (17-1), shots on goal (14-0) and penalty corners (8-1).
- ODU leads the all-time series, 57-13, and has won seven of the last 10 matchups.
- Since Head Coach Christy Morgan returned to JMU in 2014, the Dukes had never finished a game with zero shots on goal until today.
- For Fricke, her previous career high was four saves against No. 14 Boston College on Sept. 17.
- Despite the loss, James Madison leads Old Dominion in the 2023 Royal Rivalry Challenge, 3.5-1.5. The competition will continue on the gridiron this week for homecoming, on Oct. 28. Results for the Royal Rivalry can be found here.
