NEW HAVEN, Conn. – James Madison defensive end Jalen Green was named the Walter Camp Foundation Football Bowl Subdivision Defensive Player of the Week, presented by The Heights Group at Morgan Stanley, for week nine of the college football season.
This is the first time a JMU player has earned a Walter Camp National FBS player of the week honor.
Green helped JMU to a 30-27 victory against Old Dominion last Saturday, registering a career-high nine tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
His performance set a new Sun Belt Conference single-season sacks record, as he now has 15.5, passing the previous record of 13.5 by Arkansas State's Javon Rolland-Jones in 2016.
Green leads the nation in both sacks (15.5) and tackles for loss (21.0), and he's just one sack shy of tying JMU's single-season record of 16.5, set by John Daka in 2019.
If JMU was eligible for FBS records this season, Green would already rank 21st for sacks in a season, and he's also approaching the NCAA all-divisions top-25 in sacks. If the season ended today, his 1.94 sacks per game would rank third all-time across all divisions and would be the FBS single-season record. His 2.6 tackles for loss per game would also rank third all-time in FBS history if he were eligible.
