THE DUKES
- James Madison is ready for another edition of the Royal Rivalry presented by TowneBank, as the Dukes will take on Old Dominion in the Sun Belt Championship Semifinals on Sunday, March 5. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET inside the Pensacola Bay Center and will stream on ESPN+.
- JMU held Marshall to just 17-of-52 (32.7%) from the field and 19 points in the second half to earn a 62-43 win over the Thundering Herd and advance in the Sun Belt Championship Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
- The Dukes scored by committee, with eight players recording at least six points. JMU had three players score in double figures, led by senior Kiki Jefferson with 12 points, followed by juniors Kseniia Kozlova (11) and Jamia Hazell (10).
- Jefferson was named Sun Belt Player of the Year and First Team All-Sun Belt, while junior Peyton McDaniel was tabbed as Sixth Woman of the Year.
- Under Head Coach Sean O'Regan, two other players have been honored as the league's best player: Precious Hall (2017) and Kamiah Smalls (2020). Additionally, Jefferson's honor was the 11th time in program history a Duke has won conference POTW.
- The team ranks in the top 20 nationally in four categories: defensive rebounds per game (12th - 29.9), rebound per game (14th - 42.71), field goal percentage defense (17th - 36.0), and rebound margin (17th - +8.2).
- The Dukes also boast seven top-three Sun Belt Conference marks: opponent field goal percentage (1st - 36.0), rebound margin (1st - +8.2), opponent three-point percentage (2nd - 28.8), team defensive rebounds (2nd - 29.7), scoring margin (3rd - +8.9), combined team rebounds (3rd - 42.7), and combined opponent rebounds (3rd - 34.5).
- Jefferson is second in the NCAA in free throw attempts (235) and third in free throws made (187). Additionally, the Lancaster, Pa. native is 30th in total points (561) and 40th in points per game (18.1). With 796 rebounds, the senior is 24 boards away from passing Michelle Jordan (1999-03) who is eighth in program history. Additionally, Jefferson has accumulated 1,777 career points, making her 71 points shy of passing Tarik Hislop (2009-13) (1,847) who is fifth in the JMU record book.
- Graduate student Caroline Germond is first in the Sun Belt and 29th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.27.
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
- Old Dominion sits at 22-11 and finished the regular season with a 12-6 record in Sun Belt play. In the Sun Belt Championship Quarterfinals, the Monarchs held off No. 4 seed Troy, 86-83, on March 3.
- Amari Young led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds, while Mikayla Dickens added 14 points in the win.
- ODU owns three top-40 marks in the NCAA: turnovers forced per game (26th - 19.79), steals per game (39th - 9.7), and offensive rebounds per game (40th - 13.8).
SERIES HISTORY
- James Madison trails Old Dominion in the all-time series, 53-27, but has won the last seven meetings, including nine out of the last 10.
- JMU has faced the Monarchs nine times in postseason play, with ODU coming out on top eight times. The Dukes' lone win was a 67-53 performance in the 2010 CAA Championship game on March 14.
- Head Coach Sean O'Regan has led his team to a pair of wins over Old Dominion in 2022-23 with a home victory (68-54 - Dec. 31) and an overtime road thriller (73-68 - Feb. 18).
