TOWSON, Md. – Towson guard Dylan Williamson drained a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to lift Towson past James Madison, 67-63, on Saturday night in front of 3,036 fans at TU Arena.
Williamson, who scored the final eight points of the game, finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Tigers past JMU, who fell to 2-2.
The tandem of
Mark Freeman (20) and
Xavier Brown (16) combined for 36 points and eight assists, but the rest of the Dukes shot just 30 percent from the floor.
Elijah Hutchins-Everett had a career-high four blocks.
Along with Williamson's 22 points, Nendah Tarke, Rahdir Hicks, and Tomiwa Sulaiman scored nine points apiece.
How It Happened
First Half: James Madison 36, Towson 31
- Dylan Williamson hit his first three shots from the field and Towson jumped out to a 13-8 lead at the 15:39 mark.
- Down 20-12, JMU used a 13-2 run to take a 25-22 lead on a layup from Justin Taylor with just over eight minutes left in the half.
- Towson took a 29-25 lead on a layup from Tomiwa Sulaiman, but a pair of 3-pointers from Bryce Lindsay and Brown swung the score to 31-29 in favor of the Dukes.
- Freeman connected on a three-pointer and fadeaway jumper as time was expiring in the first to give the Dukes a five-point advantage at the break.
- JMU shot 42 percent (14-33) from the field in the first and outrebounded the Tigers 21-16 with six offensive rebounds.
Second Half: Towson 36, James Madison 27
- Towson used a 9-2 run out of the break to take a 40-38 lead with 15:10 on the clock.
- Freeman scored six points in a row to tie the score at 51-51 with 6:51 left.
- Hicks hit a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 54-51 lead, and their advantage grew to five (56-51) on a steal from Hicks and a layup from Messiah Jones.
- A Williamson deep ball with 1:56 remaining put the home team up 62-56, but a dunk from Brown and a pair of free throws from Elijah Hutchins-Everett trimmed the deficit to 62-60.
- Williamson hit a deep trey to give the Tigers a 65-60 lead with 17 seconds left as Towson held on for the win.
