Field Hockey Falls to Miami (Ohio) in MAC Title Game

OXFORD, Ohio – James Madison was limited to three shots on goal as Miami (Ohio) captured its seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Championship with a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Miami Stadium.
The Dukes (14-6, 7-1 MAC) were held to seven penalty corners and nine shots against a stout RedHawks' (13-7, 7-1 MAC) defense.
Goalkeeper Katie Fricke (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) recorded six saves including three on penalty corners. Alice Roeper (Delft, The Netherlands/Segbroek College), Skyler Brown and Cassidy Strittmatter (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) earned spots on the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Miami's Nicky Sjouken made three stops for her sixth shutout of the season. Paula Peña Martinez, Negrete Garcia and Carlie Servis all found the back of the net in the win. Martinez and Garcia also added assists, along with Berta Mata and Henriette Schlueter.
How It Happened
- The RedHawks opened up the scoring when Mata and Schlueter assisted Martinez on a penalty corner less than two minutes into the match.
- JMU only produced two shots in the first half as they trailed 1-0 at the half.
- Miami found the back of the net after Garcia collected a loose ball in the circle and sent it to the left post to make it 2-0 early in the second.
- Negrete sent a pass in front to Servis for a one-timer to push Miami to 3-0.
- Despite adding five shots in the final frame, JMU was unable to break the shutout.
Game Notes
- James Madison was shutout for just the second time in 2024. Earlier in the season, Cal came away with a 3-0 victory over the Dukes on Sept. 22.
- The Dukes lead Miami 2-1 in the all-time series, dating back to 1996.
