Dukes Down Lehigh and George Mason to Close Out 4-0 Weekend

After trailing 9-4 in the fifth inning against Lehigh (2-5), JMU rattled off 13 consecutive runs and walked off the Mountain Hawks 17-9 on an inside-the-park grand slam from Kate Carrier. In the nightcap against George Mason, Reed Butler tallied three hits and RBIs, and Alissa Humphrey threw her second complete game of the season, striking out eight to shut out George Mason 7-0, which fell to 2-6.
The Dukes hit .424 as a team this weekend, collecting 53 hits and six home runs in four games. Third baseman Jasmine Hall finished 8-of-14 (.571) at the plate with two doubles and a home run, while Butler hit with a home run and a recorded a team-leading eight RBIs, while sophomore KK Mathis picked up seven hits and a double.
Over two appearances, Humphrey pitched 12 scoreless innings and racked up 14 strikeouts. The senior came out of the bullpen in Friday's 8-1 win over Lehigh, tossing five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. In the nightcap, the senior threw her second complete game of the season against George Mason, scattering five hits and striking out eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
JMU 17, Lehigh 9
- Jasmine Hall walked and stole second, and Reed Butler doubled down the left field line to give JMU a 1-0 lead in the first.
- Lehigh jumped ahead 4-1 in the second inning on four unearned runs.
- After J. Hall singled through the left side, a throwing error allowed Avery Pinder to score, trimming the deficit to 4-2.
- Butler smashed a two-run single to tie the score at 4-4 through three.
- The Mountain Hawks answered with five runs, thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Josie Charles and Brooke Cannon.
- Looking to rally, Henzler led off the fifth inning with a single, and J. Hall homered to cut the Lehigh lead to 9-6.
- Edwards launched a game-tying three-run home run to left field, tying the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the fifth.
- J. Hall picked up her fourth and fifth RBIs of the day on a double to left center, giving JMU the lead back (11-9).
- Fishman hit an opposite-field double to score J.Hall and extend the Dukes' lead to 12-9, and Edwards lined another single to score Fishman and make the score 13-9.
- With the score 13-9, Carrier hit an inside-the-park home run to give the Dukes the walk-off win.
JMU 7, George Mason 0
- JMU got on the board in the first, as Butler scored Mathis on an RBI single, which made the score 1-0.
- Humphrey struck out the side in the third as the Dukes held a 1-0 lead.
- J.Hall led off the bottom of the third with a single, and Butler extended JMU's lead to 3-0 on a homerun to straightaway center.
- Humphrey worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, inducing a groundout to thwart the Patriots' rally.
- The Dukes extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Abbie Campbell brought home Edwards and Fishman on a single to right.
- Three singles in the sixth loaded the bases for Edwards, who brought home Hallie Hall on an RBI groundout to close out the scoring for JMU.
- Humphrey picked up her eighth strikeout to finish off the complete game shutout.
GAME NOTES
- JMU improved to 9-2 all-time against Lehigh and 33-9 versus George Mason.
- Carrier and Edwards both hit the first home runs of their careers.
- Through eight games, Henzler is 16-of-36 (.444) at the plate, with two home runs.
- Four Dukes – Henzler, Carrier, J.Hall, and Mathis – are hitting over .400 through nine games.
- The 17 runs scored by JMU against Lehigh are the most since also scoring 17 vs. Towson on March 27, 2022.
- The Dukes' fielding percentage of .993 is sixth nationally.
- JMU drew 12 walks this weekend, bringing its season total to 38, 14th in the country.
- Humphrey moved past Jenny Clohan (2006-09) for the fifth most strikeouts in school history. Additionally, she tied Briana Carrerra for eighth all-time in games started (53) and tied Liz George (2002-05) in complete games (34).
- Humphrey also moved to sixth in career shutouts (14).
JMU travels to Columbia, S.C., for the Gamecock Invitational. The tournament hosted by the University of South Carolina will feature games against Charlotte, South Carolina, and South Alabama.
