Schiavone Named to Catcher of the Year Award Watch List

WICHITA, Kan. – James Madison baseball's Jason Schiavone has been announced as one of 63 catchers to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award Watch List, the Wichita Sports Commission announced Thursday afternoon.
The award honors the nation's top Division I collegiate catcher as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.
Schiavone, one of two Sun Belt Conference backstops named to the list, has started all 36 games this season for the Dukes. He's batting at a .288 clip this year, connecting on a triple, five doubles and a team-high-tying 10 home runs. He's driven in 29 runs and has scored 33 runs.
Overall in the Sun Belt, he is one of 10 hitters to hit the double-digit home run mark and one of three catchers to be in double-digits for caught stealing by with a league-leading 15. In conference games, he ranks first in caught stealing by (seven), tied for third in home runs (five), tied for ninth in walks (11) and 10th in slugging percentage (.673).
During the season, he has put together one of the four JMU double-digit games hit streaks at 11 games and has posted a 12-game and 14-game reached base streak. The Laytonsville, Md. native has reached base in all but four games this season and has recording a hit in 75-percent of games this season.
Schiavone and the Dukes are back on the diamond April 19-21 as they host Georgia Southern for a three-game set at Veterans Memorial Park.
