HARRISONBURG, Va. – Guard
Zakiya Stephenson will join the James Madison women's basketball program for the 2024-25 season, as announced by Head Coach
Sean O'Regan on Tuesday morning.
Stephenson makes her way to Harrisonburg after spending her freshman campaign at Ole Miss where she played in 30 games, making five starts. During her time in Oxford, the guard averaged 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 11.8 minutes, dishing out 50 total assists, the third-highest total on the team. The Virginia Beach, Va. native recorded five or more assists in three games, becoming the first Rebel freshman to do so since the 2019 season.
"Zakiya is an athletic, versatile point guard that will have a huge impact for us," said O'Regan. "Her attitude, personality and demeanor are a perfect fit for our culture. I'm extremely excited to have her join our family."
Prior to her time at Ole Miss, Stephenson led Princess Anne 5A Virginia State Championships in 2020-2021 and 2022-23. The former Cavalier was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 88 player in the nation by ESPN's HoopGurlz and the No. 29 player in Virginia by MaxPreps.
Stephenson will join fellow transfer
Ro Scott (Marshall), and freshmen
Alonna Poole and
Angela Williams for next year's campaign.
