Dukes Sweep App State with Double-Digit Output

The Dukes improved to 19-12, 6-6 Sun Belt, while also setting their best 17-game start at home since 2010 at 14-3. They have now recorded three home sweeps in the same season for the first time since 2011. The Mountaineers dropped to 18-11, 5-7 Sun Belt and have been swept in a league series for the first time since April 14-16, 2022.

Leading the Dukes at the plate was junior Jason Schiavone, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a homer and a career-high-tying four runs scored. Classmate Todd Mozoki improved to 3-1 on the year with 1.1 innings pitched of relief.

How It Happened
First Inning
The Mountaineers struck first with an unearned run, as a throwing error allowed a runner to reach and advance to second before Banks Tolley would single him in.

Third Inning
Schiavone led off the third with his ninth homer of the season to tie the game at one.

Fourth Inning
Junior Ryan Dooley gave JMU its first lead of the day with a solo shot of his own, making the score 2-1 with his third of the year.

Fifth Inning
A leadoff homer from Hunter Wilder tied the game in the fifth ahead of a bases loaded drawn walk to give App State a 3-2 lead.

Freshman Kyle Langley gave the lead right back to JMU with his second career homer after Schiavone drew a walk two batters ahead, making it 4-3.

Sixth Inning
An RBI single from Joseph Zamora tied the game back up for App State at four-all.

JMU broke the game open with a bases clearing double from sophomore Wyatt Peifer. The Dukes loaded the bases with two errors and a walk before Peifer would knock all three runners in to make the score 7-4.

Seventh Inning
Dooley would add a run to the lead, making it 8-4 JMU with a single that scored sophomore Mike Mancini.

Eighth Inning
Three consecutive singles from junior Fenwick Trimble, Mancini and junior Coleman Calabrese added a run each to increase the lead to 11-4.

Ninth Inning
A solo shot from Austin St. Laurent for App State made it 11-5.

Game Notes
- The first inning run scored by App State is just the fourth time JMU has given up a run in the first inning at home this season.
- The three homers hit by JMU marks the sixth time the Dukes have hit three or more in a game this year.
- JMU recorded seven RBI's with two outs.
- Mike Mancini extended his hit streak to 13 games with his RBI single in the eighth inning.
- When scoring 10 or more runs in a game, the Dukes improved to 7-1.
