HARRISONBURG, Va. – Defending Sun Belt Conference Champion James Madison has released its 2024-25 non-conference schedule, men's basketball Head Coach
Preston Spradlin announced on Thursday morning.
"We had the unique situation this season where our non-conference schedule was essentially a blank slate," Spradlin said. "With the level of success JMU has experienced, this presented a great challenge, but we felt an even greater opportunity to create a schedule that would check many of the boxes important to our team's success and serve our passionate fan base. With all that in mind, we are pleased with the strength of schedule, the quality of our opponents, the number of home games and the opportunity to compete in a destination in-season tournament. All of these will challenge this team and allow us to see exactly where we are, and what we need to do in preparation for the Sun Belt Conference schedule."
JMU will kick off the 2024-25 campaign hosting Ohio on Monday, Nov. 4 as part of the second annual MAC-SBC Challenge, as the Dukes have won seven straight season openers dating back to 2016. James Madison will hit the road for the second leg of the MAC-SBC Challenge matchup, set for Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025. Matchups are set based on real-time NET rankings and announced in January.
Following a trip to Norfolk State on Nov. 9, JMU will return home to host Division III Mary Baldwin on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
From there, the Dukes will head north to take on former CAA foe Towson on Nov. 16. The contest will be the first between the two former conference rivals since Feb. 26, 2022. JMU leads the all-time series with the Tigers 37-21.
A trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the inaugural Boardwalk Battle (Nov. 21-23) highlights the next portion of the schedule. The Dukes will play three games in The Sunshine State and open the event against UIC on Nov. 21, followed by two more games against teams to be determined.
JMU will return to the Commonwealth to reignite another former rivalry, as JMU will head to Fairfax, Va., for the first time since 2019 to square off with George Mason on Friday, Nov. 29. Since 1969-70, the two teams have played 96 times with the series deadlocked 48-48.
The Dukes will welcome a pair of strong mid-major opponents in ETSU (Dec. 3) and Utah Valley (Dec. 7) to open the month of December. ETSU finished 19-16 in 2023-24 and reached the SoCon Championship while Utah Valley went 16-16 as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
JMU will travel to Wake Forest to take on the Demon Deacons on Dec. 17, before wrapping up non-conference play with a home tilt against NAIA Midway (Ky.) on Dec. 29.
The announcement of JMU's non-conference schedule completes the entire 2024-25 schedule, as the Sun Belt Conference slate was released earlier in August. The full schedule can be found at
