HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison field hockey trailed Cal 1-0 halfway through the fourth before the Golden Bears added insurance with a pair of goals in the final 6:17 to overpower the Dukes 3-0 at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.

For JMU (4-2, 1-0 MAC), redshirt freshman goalkeeper Molly Schreiner made a career-best 10 saves in the loss.

Liz Klompmaker scored the game's final two goals, while Holly Pears broke the stalemate in the opening frame. Canisha van Duyn (2) and Sydney Decher (1) dished out assists in the win. In goal for Cal (5-1, 0-1 ACC), Tina Jolly stopped a pair of JMU shots for the clean sheet.

Quoting Head Coach Christy Morgan
"We did not play JMU hockey today. We played a passive style of hockey rather than aggressive. When we play our game, we're a different team. It was a disappointing loss, but more disappointing that we didn't play to our identity. The good news is that we have a conference to play in, and we won our first conference game. We're going back to the drawing board tomorrow to regroup and get our identity back."

How It Happened

On a penalty corner situation, Scheiner made a save on a shot from Olivia Sharratt, but Holly Pears collected the rebound and scored to make it 1-0 Cal with 2:30 remaining in the first.
At the 6:17 mark of the fourth, the Golden Bears cashed in on another penalty corner with a goal from Klompmaker that was partially deflected by Schreiner.
Klompmaker laced a shot from the right side of the circle to the bottom left with 0:26 on the inlet from van Duyn to help give Cal the 3-0 victory.

Game Notes

JMU still leads Cal 5-1 in the all-time series, dating back to 1985.
The result marked the Dukes' first time being shut out since suffering a 3-0 home loss to Old Dominion on Oct. 22, 2023.
The Golden Bears held the advantage in shots (19-9) and shots on goal (13-2).
Schreiner's career-best 10 saves are the most by a JMU netminder since former Duke Brandelynn Heinbaugh stopped 16 shots at William & Mary on Aug. 25, 2023.
James Madison earned a season-best eight penalty corners.
