Alonza Barnett III Named to Davey O’Brien Great 8 Once Again

FORT WORTH, Texas – James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III was selected to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 for week five of the college football season, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced.

It's the second straight week Barnett III has been honored for the award, as he later earned the National Co-Quarterback of the Week accolade.

Barnett III produced another solid outing to lead JMU to a 63-7 victory against Ball State this past Saturday, accounting for 322 yards and six total touchdowns.

He was 20-of-28 for 280 passing yards and five touchdowns while adding 44 rushing yards and a score. He guided JMU's offense on seven of its eight offensive touchdown drives, as the Dukes did not punt once in the win.

Due to the team's performance in each of the past two weeks, JMU set a program record for scoring in consecutive weeks, with 133. JMU also notched 70 in its win on Sept. 21 at North Carolina. The Dukes are also the first team since the 2019 LSU squad to score at least 63 points in back-to-back games.

Joining Barnett III on this week's Great 8 are Kansas State's Avery Johnson, Notre Dame's Riley Leonard, Alabama's Jalen Milroe, USC's Miller Moss, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Kentucky's Brock Vandagriff and UNLV's Hajj-Malik Williams.

The National Quarterback of the Week will be announced Tuesday at noon.
