Dukes Drop 5-2 Decision at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – James Madison swept the doubles point and took a pair of singles bouts into a third set before falling 5-2 to Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at the Drumlins Country Club.

JMU (0-4) claimed all three doubles courts for the first time this spring to take the early 1-0 lead, but Syracuse (2-0) answered with straight-set victories on four of its five victories courts to clinch the match.

The Dukes opened the match with a 6-0 triumph on doubles court two, as Elena Kraleva and Corinna Rietmann cruised past Nelly Knezkova and Monika Wojcik.

Trailing 4-3 on court three, the team of Hope Moulin and Daria Munteanu mounted a comeback, winning three straight games to down Shiori Ito and Serafima Shastova, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.

Moments later on court one, the duo of Ines Oliveira and Sophie Williams won a match closer than the score dictated, with a 6-3 decision over Miyuka Kimoto and Anastasia Sysoeva to round out doubles play.

In singles, Syracuse quickly seized the advantage back, winning the opening set on all six courts. The Orange took straight-set victories on courts one, two, five and six to secure the team win, with the decisive point coming on court one, where Kimoto held off Kraleva, 6-3, 7-5.

Both Oliveira and Williams forced third sets on courts two and three, but Williams would ultimately fall to Shastova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

In the final match of the day, Oliveira found a groove and was able to defeat Sysoeva by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Dukes return to action on Sunday, Feb. 2 with a trip to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
