JMU Football NCAA FBS Statistical Champion in Pair of Categories

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Following the conclusion of the 2024 college football season, James Madison finished the year as the FBS statistical champion in both turnover margin and fewest interceptions thrown.

This is the first time JMU has been an NCAA statistical champion at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Per the NCAA, the Dukes will receive a plaque from national office for finishing atop the rankings in the turnover margin category.

JMU finished the 2024 season with a +1.54 turnover margin, producing 20 more takeaways than turnovers. JMU ranked third nationally with 29 total takeaways, intercepting 17 passes (7th in FBS) and recovering 12 fumbles (6th FBS). The Dukes were also third in the FBS with just nine turnovers, two off the nation's leader (Vanderbilt – 7).

Memphis from the American Athletic Conference finished second in the turnover margin category at +1.38 (+18) while Big Ten squad Indiana was third at 1.15 (+15).

On the offensive side of the ball, JMU finished in a four-way tie for first in fewest interceptions thrown, with four. The Dukes were matched by fellow Sun Belt member Marshall, Army West Point from the AAC and Vanderbilt out of the Southeastern Conference.

However, JMU finished alone at the top in fewest interceptions per pass attempt, as it had one just every 95.5 pass attempts (382), while the next closest was Marshall, at 83.25 (333).
