JMU Registers Eight Wins at ITA Atlantic Regionals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis faced the region's top competitors at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship (Oct. 16-18), picking up eight wins at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Three players competed in the singles main draw, as Daria Munteanu and Sophie Williams advanced to the round of 32.

Mia Saveljic went 2-0 in qualifying, registering three-set wins over George Washington's Solange Skeene (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and Liberty's Aranai Martinez (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). Rietmann also won a consolation match over Richmond's Elizabeth Novak (5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (8)).

In the main draw, Munteanu opened with a 6-4, 6-0 victory against West Virginia's Daniella Shved, while Williams rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win versus Loyola's Christine Richiez. In the round of 32, both Dukes held set leads against two of the region's top players before ultimately falling in three. Munteanu fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Virginia's Martina Genis Salas, while Williams dropped a tough 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4 decision to Old Dominion's Kira Matushkina.

Saveljic also earned a consolation win against Norfolk State's Yuliya Yurkova (6-0, 6-1), and Rietmann won an extra single-set bout with Howard's Imani Jean (6-3).

The doubles tandem of Munteanu and Corinna Rietmann also won in the doubles main draw, defeating George Mason's Maya Bayat and Brooklyn Siegel, 8-3, to move into the round of 32.

JMU returns to action as a full squad at the Elon Invitational, which takes place Oct. 31 through Nov. 2.
