NEW ORLEANS – For the first time this season, James Madison forward
Ashanti Barnes was named the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Barnes posted a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds versus No. 19 Notre Dame on Sunday to earn the second conference weekly award of her career as JMU wrapped up its traditional non-conference slate with an 8-4 record. The graduate student shot 8-of-17 (.471) from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, while dishing out a pair of assists.
Â
The graduate student is the only Sun Belt player this season with multiple double-doubles consisting of 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds, having done so three times in 2025-26. Additionally, Barnes is tied for 14th in Division I with 114 total rebounds.
JMU has seen a player win Player of the Week three times so far this season, with
Peyton McDaniel being honored twice (Nov. 18 & Dec. 2). Since Week 11 of the 2024-25 season, the Dukes have captured the weekly award seven times out of 13.

James Madison opens Sun Belt play this week with contests at Coastal Carolina (Dec. 17) and Marshall (Dec. 20).
