JMU Caps 2-0 Weekend with Victory at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – James Madison won its second straight men's tennis bout with 5-2 triumph at Queens on Sunday afternoon at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.

JMU (3-3) evened its spring record after capturing the doubles point and courts three through six in singles play, including a trio of wins in straight sets.

Markus Giersiepen went 2-0 on the day, producing wins in both singles and doubles play. JMU also got singles wins from Francisco Sinopoli, Zach Fleishman and Dennis Wiebe to improve to 3-1 all-time against Queens (2-6).

JMU took the early 1-0 lead after claiming courts one and three in doubles play. Esteve Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt upended Laurenz Blickwede and Gavin Ryan, 6-3, before Giersiepen and Edson Sanchez downed Lukas Gosselin and Jan Montero Diaz, 6-4, to clinch doubles. The other match went unfinished at 5-5 on court two.

Queens evened things up in singles play, as Win Steveker took down Agusti, 6-2, 6-1, on court two. However, JMU regained the lead for good on court three, as Sinopoli cashed in on a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus Montero Diaz.

The Dukes extended the lead to 3-1 on court four, where Fleishman won a tight contest with Ryan by scores of 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. JMU clinched the win on court five, as Wiebe rolled past Luke Coppage, 6-3, 6-3.

The final two matches went the distance, as Blickwede defeated Schmitt on court one, at 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Giersiepen closed the weekend on court six with his 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Filippo Scala.

JMU is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when it hosts George Mason at 2 p.m.
