9/28/2025 4:05:00 PM | Field Hockey
Â
JMU (7-4, 2-1 MAC) was trailing 4-3 in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter before Skyler Brown was tripped in the circle, drawing a penalty stroke which was converted by Roeper with 1:15 remaining, her second stroke of the game and third goal in the contest.
Â
Julie Narleski scored the game's opening goal off an assist from Madelief Molier, the first assist of her career. Goalkeeper Molly Schreiner made 11 stops in the loss, tied for the second-most saves she's recorded in the 2025 season.
Â
For App State (8-1, 3-0 MAC), Boekaar and Frederique Grimbergen both finished with a goal and an assist, while Hadley Kuzmicky, Kassie Paul and Sophia Baxter also found the back of the net. Carlotta Fabian, Kate Richardson and Sarah Perkins added helpers in the win. Claire Grenis picked up her ninth win of the season after rejecting four shots.
Â
How It Happened
- After App State turned the ball over in its own end, Molier drove down the right goal line and passed inside to Narleski for the turn and score to make it 1-0 just 1:06 into the contest.
- The Mountaineers responded with under four minutes to go in the opening frame when Grimbergen sent a reverse shot to the bottom right corner, which was deflected in by Kuzmicky.
- App State took a 2-1 lead at the 5:07 mark of the second with a score from Grimbergen and an assist from Fabian as the Dukes were down a player due to a green card.
- Schreiner and the JMU defense turned away three penalty corners in the final 25 seconds of the first half to keep it 2-1 at the intermission.
- On an uneven rush, Richardson passed to the left post for a tap-in from Paul for a 3-1 App State lead early in the third.
- Roeper stopped the bleeding with a penalty stroke goal halfway through the frame as the Dukes trailed 3-2.
- The Mountaineers answered on a penalty corner with a direct shot from Baxter from Perkins and Boekarr less than one minute later.
- In the fourth, Roeper took advantage of a loose ball in the circle and put it in the bottom left corner to make it a one-goal game (4-3) with 10:55 left in regulation.
- Roeper converted on her second penalty stroke of the day after Brown was taken down in the box, sending a shot to the left side at the 1:15 mark to force overtime.
- Boekaar dribbled down the left side of the end line and lifted a shot over Schreiner to the top right post for the game winner.
Game Notes
- App State held an advantage in shots (19-12) and penalty corners (9-6).
- Roeper's hat trick was her first of the season and second of her career. Previously, the senior finished with three goals at Queens (N.C.) last season on Sept. 29.
- Additionally, her two penalty stroke goals marked the second time she's scored on multiple penalty strokes since going 2-for-2 versus Kent State on Oct. 11, 2024.
- Schreiner has posted three games this season with double-digit saves, including twice in the last three games.
- Today's game marked the first time this season in which JMU trailed at halftime.
- Five goals are the most allowed by the Dukes since they also suffered a 5-4 overtime loss - this time at the hands of Villanova on Oct. 1, 2023.
- JMU's most recent overtime loss was a 3-2 result against Wake Forest last season on Oct. 20.
Up Next
The Dukes will return to Harrisonburg for a four-game homestand, starting with Ball State on Friday, Oct. 3. Game time at the JMU Field Hockey Complex is slated for 2 p.m.
