Department Description:
The JMU Athletics Compliance Office is dedicated to promoting a culture of integrity and accountability by ensuring adherence to the NCAA, Sun Belt, and University rules and regulations. We support coaches, student-athletes, staff, and supporters by providing comprehensive rules education, ongoing guidance, and proactive monitoring systems. Education efforts include monthly NCAA rules meetings with coaching staff, outreach to student-athletes and athletic department personnel, and targeted communication with university stakeholders and boosters. The office also oversees key athletic areas such as recruiting, student-athlete eligibility, benefits, and financial aid.Â
Practicum/Internship Description:Â
Students will gain hands-on experience in multiple facets of NCAA compliance and college athletics operations. Interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with other departments, such as Student-Athlete Services and Administration, while assisting with the daily tasks of the Compliance Office. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of NCAA compliance processes by utilizing the NCAA Applications and researching the NCAA bylaws. This includes monitoring student-athlete academic and athletic eligibility, ensuring practice schedules comply with NCAA regulations, assisting in oversight of approving official/unofficial visits, monitoring player and staff additions/deletions, assisting in financial aid awards, as well as many other NCAA processes.Â
Candidates will be required to demonstrate a high level of confidentiality, reliability, accountability, and attention to detail to be considered for this position. The student should also possess excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills.Â
Responsibilities may include:Â
·               Assisting the Director of Compliance with daily tasks Â
·               Supporting the organization of compliance files and documentationÂ
·               Participating in special projects and departmental initiativesÂ
·               Offering guidance to coaches regarding recruiting, player eligibility, camp/clinic, or competition inquiries to ensure compliance with NCAA rules Â
·               Attending and helping facilitate monthly Rules Education meetings for coaches and student-athletesÂ
·               Navigating programs such as the NCAA application, which include LSDBI, Eligibility Center, Compliance Assistant, the Transfer Portal, Excel, and CanvaÂ
