Please see the descriptions below for the 2018 JMA awards - you may nominate individuals for awards here. Nominations begin on December 19 and will close January 20 for spring and fall sports, March 15 for winter sports (basketball, swim & dive, indoor track & field). During this time coaches are welcome to submit no more than one person for each of the below awards. As a reminder, the award time period covers spring 2017, fall 2017 and winter 2017-18.
Student-Athlete of the Year
Two awards (1 Male/1 Female) - Recognizing the top athletic performance covering an entire sport's season
Casey Carter Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Two awards (1 Male/1 Female) - Honoring the best combination of athletic and academic performance
Rookie of the Year
Two awards (1 Male/1 Female) - Awarded to the person who made strong contributions in competition while maintaining high academic standards during the 2016 calendar year. Must be in first year of collegiate competition (i.e. not a transfer with previous competitive experience)
Courage Award
One award in recognition of a student-athletewho went outside of his/her comfort zone and overcame a personal obstacle to show up for his/her team. This is a student-athlete who faced considerable adversity and pulled through with significant individual achievement and/or contributions to team success.
Comeback Award
One aware in recognition of a student-athlete who returned to competition following an injury (or prolonged absence from competition) with significant individual achievement and/or contributions to team success.
Unsung Hero Award
One award to identify a student-athlete who made the biggest contribution to the team behind the scenes - the teammate who always put his/her team first, brought energy in everything he/she did, but didn't see the glory in competition. This person made significant team contributions that perhaps wouldn't show up on a box score or earn all-conference awards.
Unseen Hero Award
One award given to a non-coaching JMU Athletics staff member who made significant contributions to the success of a team or to the overall success or positive image of the department through actions, character, achievements, etc. This is a member of the athletics department who supports your team every day, but rarely is seen by anyone outside of the team (example: Duke Club rep, marketing rep, communications rep, etc.).
Breakthrough Performance of the Year The athlete who emerged from relatively unknown in competition to a strong contributor in competition. This athlete either put in exceptional work to increase his/her role on the team or had the "light bulb" moment to reach or exceed his/her potential.
Best Postseason Performance by an Individual Best Postseason Performance by a Team Key Moments to Know The student-athlete awards banquet will take place on April 23 at 7 p.m. in Grafton-Stovall Theater.
