A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.cdc.gov/headsup
Certified athletic trainers, athletic training students, team physicians, coaches, and teammates all need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion to properly recognize and intervene on behalf of the affected student-athlete. While each concussion is unique, there are a clustering of symptoms that are common. Not all concussions will have all of these symptoms. Symptoms also change day by day.

In accordance with best practices and standard of care outlines, all incoming JMU athletes undergo a panel of baseline concussion tests so that, in the event of a concussion, we have a pre-injury comparison to assist the physician in determining the athlete’s health status. Additionally, any athlete that has sustained a concussion within the last 12 months will repeat their baseline testing at the beginning of the next school year.
Every concussion is unique and therefore the treatment and rehabilitation process is different for every individual. The team physician and athletic trainers work together to coordinate a tailored, targeted process for each athlete that sustains a concussion based on their symptoms and presentation with the goal to minimize recovery time as much as possible. The time for a concussion to resolve is never the same and based on individual circumstances, but once an athlete has been cleared by a physician to begin returning to activity, each athlete will undergo a multi-step process to return to sport safely.
