While JMU has a longstanding history of athletics accomplishments, the 2015-16 year ushered in a markedly higher level of departmental success, which has continued over the last six years. During that stretch, the Dukes have won at a .656 clip across all sports, which ranks top 15 nationally for Division I.
Highlights include:
• Two national championships – FCS football (2016), lacrosse (2018).
• Three football title game appearances (2016, 2017, 2019 – plus 2020 semifinals).
• Discounting the COVID-impacted 2020 season, JMU is one of just six Division I college football programs to average 11 or more victories per season over the last seven years (James Madison, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, North Dakota State).
• 2021 Women’s College World Series (semifinalist).
• Three softball Super Regional appearances (2016, 2019, 2021).
• Men’s soccer national quarterfinals (2018).
As a testament to both overall and balanced success, JMU has won 28 total conference championships across 11 different sports over the last six years (2015-2021).
JMU has also finished in the top 100 of the Learfield Director’s Cup in each of the last five years the rankings were issued, including first in the CAA in the last four.
