Stephen LaPorta currently serves as the associate A.D. for compliance and governance, after earning a promotion in September of 2023. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the compliance office, including creating a comprehensive rules education program, providing interpretations of NCAA rules, submitting NCAA waivers and violation reports and monitoring financial aid and eligibility for all 18 sport programs. He serves as liaison to admissions, university business office university financial aid and the bookstore. Among his expanded duties as associate AD, he oversees the program review process for the department, ensuring that individual units are routinely evaluated for best practices and effective operation. He also serves a key role in applying NCAA, Sun Belt and campus regulations within department operations and guiding the department in considering future legislation.
LaPorta was promoted to assistant A.D. in August of 2016 after being named director of compliance in July of 2014. He began working in James Madison’s compliance department as an assistant in August 2010.
In addition to his direct JMU duties, he serves on the NCAA's Committee for Legislative Relief (since June 2017). He was named vice chair for the committee starting September 2018. He is also a member of the NAAC's Legislation and Governance Committee since October 2013.
Before working at JMU, he spent a year as a full-time athletics compliance intern at Virginia Tech.
LaPorta graduated from JMU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in sports and recreation management with a minor in business. He then continued his education at JMU, earning a master’s degree in sport and recreation leadership in 2012. LaPorta also received his National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC) Educational Certification in February 2014.
He currently resides in McGaheysville with his wife, Kristin.
