Alex Medina joined James Madison University in the summer 2017 as an assistant athletic trainer after spending two years with the Arizona Cardinals. He provides medical care for the JMU football and men’s golf student-athletes.
Medina served as an intern athletic trainer on the Arizona Cardinals medical staff for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. During his time with the Cardinals, he assisted in the daily operations of the athletic training room including physical rehabilitation and acute medical care. Medina also coordinated medical coverage for the NFL’s Pro player and regional combine as well as Kurt Werner’s ‘First Things First’ Foundation Ultimate Football Experience. His experience was highlighted by the 2015-16 divisional playoff game when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Green Bay Packers in overtime to reach the NFC Championship game.
Prior to Arizona, Medina was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of South Carolina where he earned his Masters’ degree in 2015. During his graduate assistantship, he served with the Gamecocks football team during the 2014-15 athletic year and as the head athletic trainer at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School during the 2013-14 year. He also served as a clinical instructor for the undergraduate athletic training program and a teaching assistant for the graduate level anatomy dissection lab.
Medina completed his Bachelor’s degree in athletic training at the University of South Florida in 2013. As a student, he completed clinical rotations with USF football, men’s soccer, softball and local high schools. He also completed a summer student internship with the NFL’s Detroit Lions in 2012.
Medina is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is a licensed athletic trainer by the Virginia Board of Medicine. He also holds certifications in Blood Flow Restriction rehabilitation, Graston Technique, and CPR/AED for professional rescuers by the American Red Cross.
A native of Orlando, Florida, Medina enjoys cooking and traveling to see family and friends.
