Courtney Gallagher comes to JMU from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of the sports nutrition department. She worked primarily with women's volleyball, men's tennis, softball and the equestrian teams and provided nutrition counseling and recommendations to student-athletes.
A 2013 graduate of Cornell, Gallagher was a Division I athlete for four years as the goalie on their women's lacrosse team. She graduated from Cornell with a degree in nutritional sciences. She then earned her master's in clinical nutrition in 2015 at SUNY Buffalo, and during this time worked as a graduate assistant sports nutritionist within their athletic program. She also served as a Dietetic Internship Advisory Board Student Member at Buffalo.
Gallagher is a registered dietitian and a three-year member of the Collegiate & Professional Sports Dietitians Association. In 2017, became a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
At JMU Gallagher will be responsible for the development, implementation and administration of a comprehensive sports nutrition program for JMU Athletics. Her primary focus will include the education and counseling of individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; coordinating with the JMU Team Physician,Dr. Kent Diduch, to provide medical nutrition therapy when necessary; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services; serving as a food and nutrition resource for student-athletes, sport coaches, sports medicine staff, and strength/conditioning staff; and providing sports nutrition education for athletic teams and coaches.
Gallagher will also serve as a key member of the Integrated Health and Sports Performance Unit at JMU, which is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of professionals committed to assisting student-athletes realize their full potential, minimize risk of injury, achieve competitive excellence and have an exemplary student-athlete experience at JMU. Additionally she will serve as a member of the multidisciplinary team of health care providers for at-risk student-athletes, the Dukes C.A.R.E. (Care and Recovery Enhancement) Team.
