At JMU: In his 10th JMU year and fifth as defensive coordinator... has coached the safeties since 2004 and is assistant head coach... became defensive line coach in 2002 after coaching the running backs for three years... joined the JMU staff with Mickey Matthews in 1999... in 1999 coached Curtis Keaton, who ran for team-season records of 1,719 yards and 20 scores and was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the NFL draft... for two years coached tailback/return specialist Delvin Joyce, who in 2000 became the first Division I-AA player to reach the 1,000-yard career mark in rushing, receiving, punt returns and kickoff returns... in 2002 coached first-team all-league defensive end Jerame Southern and second-team all-league defensive end Richard Hicks... safety Rodney McCarter in 2004 was second-team All-Atlantic 10 and safety Phil Minafield was second-team all-league in 2006... JMU in 2004 allowed an average of 86.8 yards per game rushing (second nationally) and 324.7 yards per game overall... in 2005 JMU allowed 106.8 yards per game rushing and 287.8 per game overall (No. 8 nationally)... in 2006 JMU allowed 84.8 yards per game rushing (fourth nationally) and 280.4 per game overall... JMU in 2007 gave up 126.6 yards per game rushing and 324.2 per game overall... JMU was second nationally in sacks in 2006 (4.0 per game) and had 56 sacks in 15 games in 2004.

Before JMU: Coached from 1996-98 at Oklahoma -- as outside linebackers and strong safeties coach in 1998 and defensive graduate assistant in 1996-97... defensive coordinator at West Virginia State in 1995, defensive line coach at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College in 1994, an assistant with the linebackers at Marshall from 1992-93 and a Marshall defensive graduate assistant in 1991... played at Marshall from 1986-90 and was an all-league safety... on Marshall's 1987 national runner-up team... received Sports Illustrated's defensive player of week recognition while at Marshall, where he also was a sprinter in track.

Personal: Business administration degree with a finance and business law concentration... named to the Dean's Honor Roll four times... played at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hill, Calif.... has a daughter, Kierstin Paige (15).
