James Ferguson was hired on Dec. 18, 2018 as James Madison University’s director of football operations. He additionally added the title of pro scout liaison in January 2020.
Ferguson came to JMU after spending the last four years on Cignetti’s staff, including two seasons at Elon in the same role and two at Indiana (Pa.) as an assistant.
Most recently, he was director of football operations at Elon for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
In his role, Ferguson is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the JMU football program, providing direct support to Coach Cignetti and staff, both on campus and around the community. He also coordinates and schedules team travel and meetings and serves as a liaison to other departments within the university as it pertains to the team and student-athletes.
Prior to Elon, Ferguson served as an assistant at Indiana (Pa.), working with the offensive line while obtaining his master’s degree. The Crimson Hawks ranked fourth nationally in NCAA Division II in rushing offense in 2016. In Ferguson’s two seasons at IUP, the program went 19-5 (12-2 conference) and made a pair of NCAA Division II Playoff appearances. In 2016, the team ended the season ranked 12th in the nation.
He also spent time as a volunteer assistant scout and camp operations intern with the Buffalo Bills.
Ferguson earned his bachelor’s degree in mass media and journalism and communication studies from Clarion University in 2014. He is also a 2016 graduate of IUP, where he earned his master’s degree in sports management.
