Hartman coached at Centenary during the 2008-09 season, Richmond from 2005-08, Louisiana-Lafayette from 2004-05, Rice from 2003-04 and from 1996-97, and McNeese State from 1997-98. He played collegiately at Tulane and professionally in the Continental Basketball Association with the Shreveport Storm and the Rapid City Thrillers. He was an all-rookie honoree in the CBA in 1994.
While at Richmond from 2005-08 Hartman was the lead recruiter for several Spiders, including 2008 Atlantic 10 freshman of the year and 2009 second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection Kevin Anderson. He also recruited David Gonzalvez, a 2009 Atlantic 10 honorable mention choice, who was eighth in the conference in scoring and third in three-point shooting percentage. Atlantic 10 player of the week in January of 2009 Justin Harper, Atlantic 10 rookie of the week in January of 2008 Kevin Smith, along with Francis Martel, Josh Duinker and Darrius Garrett all were recruited to the Spiders by Coach Hartman.
A post player himself at Tulane, Hartman has worked to improve the skills of several post players over the years, including Michael Harris, Rice's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Harris, the 2003 Western Athletic Conference newcomer of the year, was also a three-time All-WAC honoree from 2004-07. Also Hartman helped develop Dan Geriot, who garnered All- Atlantic 10 freshman team honors in 2007 and was third-team All-Atlantic 10 in 2008 as a sophomore.
At Louisiana-Lafayette in 2004-05 Hartman coached three All-Sun Belt Conference performers, which included Orien Greene, who was league defensive player of the year, Tiras Wade, who was first-team All-Sun Belt, as well as Brian Hamilton, who third-team All-Sun Belt. The Ragin Cajuns that season qualified for the NCAA Tournament, losing to Louisville 68-62.
Hartman has worked with several players who have gone on to join National Basketball Association teams, including Louisiana-Lafayette's Greene with Boston, McNeese State's Tierre Brown with Golden State, Rice's Michael Harris with Houston, Rice's Mike Wilks with Seattle, and Rice's Morris Almond with Utah.
Hartman coached twice at Rice, most recently from January 2003 until June 2004, and worked with three all-league performers. He also served as a radio analyst for the Rice radio network for the 2003-04 season before returning to work as the program's operations director.
Hartman earned a degree in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism from Tulane in 1994. He completed his Tulane career 10th in scoring (1,180), third on the program's career field goal percentage list (52.8 percent) and seventh in career steals (146), and he received the Tulane alumni association's outstanding athlete award in 1993-94. He was All-Louisiana and honorable mention all-conference in 1993-94, honorable mention all-conference in 1992-93 and a member of the Metro Conference all-rookie team in 1990-91.
Hartman was selected in the third round of the 1994 Continental Basketball Association draft by the Rapid City Thrillers and was traded in December 1994 to the Shreveport Storm.
