Matt Sholtis joined the James Madison men's basketball staff prior to the 2021-22 season as the Dukes' Director of Operations.
This past season, Sholtis helped lead the Dukes to their most successful season in years, winning 22 games for the first time since winning 24 in 1981-82 and helping JMU set multiple program records. The Dukes would go on to finish inside the NCAA NET/RPI top 100 for the first time since 2010-11.
In 2021-22, his first season with the Dukes, Sholtis helped JMU navigate and overcome an unprecedented set of obstacles. Faced with a ban from the league's tournament, JMU overcame injuries and a 29-day COVID-19 pause to notch the program's second straight winning season, going 15-14 on the season.
Sholtis comes to Harrisonburg after assisting with several levels of the men’s basketball program at Charlotte. This past season, he served as the 49ers’ Director of Scouting, overseeing the entirety of the program’s video operation and other aspects of the organization. In 2019-20, Sholtis was a graduate assistant with the program, assisting the coaching staff with scouting reports while playing a significant role in the 49ers’ recruiting operation.
Sholtis earned two degrees from Charlotte, working four seasons as a manager with the team while getting his bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in journalism in 2019. He then earned his master’s degree in liberal studies earlier this year.
“Matt is a tireless working who will work very hard to help our student-athletes,” Byington said. “He has handled a lot of responsibilities in his time at Charlotte and should make a seamless transition as our Director of Basketball Operations.”
