Former James Madison men’s basketball player Ian Caskill returned to campus as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team in May 2016.
“I’m elated to have a coach on staff with Ian's playing experience,” Head Coach Sean O’Regan stated. “He will be able to tutor and mentor our post players with first-hand experience from his time overseas and his time at JMU. It’s certainly always good to have a coach with JMU blood. Ian will be a great asset to our program.”
Caskill spent the previous decade playing professional basketball overseas in various French leagues. For his final three seasons, he competed for Caen Basket Calvados and averaged 10.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game during the 2015-16 campaign.
While playing overseas, Caskill was a three-time NM2 Champion. He also earned the Eurobasket.com All-French NM1 Center of the Year honor in 2012 and All-French N1 Defensive Player of the Year in 2007.
“I am extremely excited and very grateful for the opportunity to be able to come back to my alma mater and work with the women's basketball team,” Caskill said. “I would like to thank Coach O for giving me the opportunity, and I look forward to contributing to the continuing success of this program. JMU truly is a special place and I couldn't be happier to be back in Harrisonburg.”
Caskill's first season on the JMU women's basketball sideline was a successful one. The Dukes went 26-9 and advanced to the CAA title before winning through to the third round of the WNIT.
In his second season, the team continued to maintain their success earning their second straight appearance in the WNIT Third Round. He helped the team post a 23-11 overall record.
In his third year, Caskill assisted JMU to one of its most successful seasons in program history. He helped the Dukes advance to the WNIT Semifinals for the first time since 2012. The 29 team wins produced tied the program record for wins in a season, while capping off 18 wins in the Convocation Center for a program record and piecing together 31-straight wins at Convo for the second longest streak in JMU history.
Prior to the season getting shutdown early due to COVID-19 concerns, Caskill helped coach the team to its third consecutive CAA regular-season title after finishing the year with a 25-4 (16-2 CAA) record in 2019-20.
With a concentrated emphasis on bigs, Caskill saw two of his post players earn all-conference honors at the end of the season, led by senior Kayla Cooper-Williams who was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Cooper-Williams was also named to the All-Defensive Team and Third Team while freshman Rayne Tucker earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
In 2020-21, Caskill saw Rayne Tucker earn her second all-conference honor as she was named to the All-CAA Third Team. Caskill helped the Dukes go 14-10, 9-6 CAA in an odd year, as the Dukes earned the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Caskill was a center for the JMU men’s basketball team from 1999-2003. He averaged 6.3 points per game on 51.0-percent shooting for his career, including 11.6 points per game on 57.7-percent shooting as a senior. His final year as a Duke also saw him average 7.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks over 25.3 minutes played per game.
Caskill earned his Bachelor of Science from JMU in 2003, majoring in sport and recreation management.
