Laphelia Doss, the newest member of the JMU coaching staff, joined the Dukes as an assistant coach in July 2006. She assists with coaching the post players and coordinates community relations.
A 1998 graduate of Eastern Kentucky, Doss was formerly an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2002-06.
"I am excited to have Laphelia Doss join our coaching staff," said JMU head coach Kenny Brooks when Doss' hiring was announced. "She has a wealth of knowledge to bring to our program, and I feel she will fit in wonderfully here at JMU."
As a player Doss was a three-time (1996, 1997, 1998) Ohio Valley Conference choice and an OVC all-freshman selection in 1995. She was named the most valuable player of the 1997 OVC championship tournament after leading the Colonels to the league championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Eastern was the OVC regular-season champion three times (1995, shared with three other teams; 1997; 1998, co-champion) during Doss' career.
As a sophomore Doss led the league and finished ninth in the nation in rebounding with an 11.5 per game average.
Doss set school career (1,027), season (310) and game (26) rebounding records. She finished her career in 10th place on the Colonels' all-time scoring list with 1,378 points, and she is the only player in the school's history to tally more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
The Franklin, Ky., native holds a bachelor?s degree in broadcast journalism. She earned a master?s degree in sports administration from EKU in 2003.
