Chris Ouren is serving in his third year as the director of equipment room operations at James Madison. He oversees four athletic equipment rooms and serves as the point of contact for all apparel and equipment ordering within the athletic department. His daily activities consist of handling daily operations of the Godwin Hall equipment room and the 13 athletic programs that are serviced from it.
Ouren began his career in 2006 as an intern at Harvard. Following his internship, he took a position serving as the assistant equipment manager at the University of Alabama Birmingham. While with UAB, he was responsible for the equipment operations of eight sports while also assisting with football. In this role, Ouren worked daily with the football program. He attended practices and games, was responsible for setting up the locker room at all home and away games and was in charge of the student manager program for the department. He remained with UAB for six years until joining JMU.
Ouren is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA). He has worked in operations at several bowl games and other collegiate events, including the 2004 Independence Bowl, the 2005 EV1.net Houston Bowl, 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, the 2008-2012 SEC Baseball Championships, the 2008-2013 Papajohns.com/BBVA Compass Bowl and the 2011 and 2012 NCAA College Cups
He graduated in 2006 from Iowa State with his bachelor’s degree in health and human performance, with an emphasis on sport management. While studying he served three years as a student manager. After completing his undergraduate degree, he continued his education at UAB, earning his Master of Business Administration in 2009.
A native of Newton, Iowa, Ouren currently resides in Harrisonburg. When he is not working in the equipment room, he can be found spending time with his wife, Casey, their two sons, Wyatt and Ethan, and their daughter Abbie.
