Former assistantÂ
Jon McClure will rejoin the James Madison women's soccer program as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2017 season, Head CoachÂ
David Lombardo announced on July 26, 2017.
Â
McClure was an assistant coach for the Dukes from 2008-2011, helping the Dukes to 48 victories and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances that included wins over Georgia, Wake Forest and Texas. McClure, a 2001 graduate of Bridgewater College, was also an assistant women's soccer coach for his alma mater from 2004-08 and a volunteer assistant for the men from 2003-04.
Â
In addition to his collegiate experience, McClure has a lengthy resume of local coaching experience, having served as the head coach at Fort Defiance High School for the last 14 seasons. McClure also serves on the board of directors with the Shenandoah Valley United travel program based out of Harrisonburg.
Â
"I am very excited to have Jon rejoin our program," Lombardo said. "He was with us for some very exciting times in his previous stint with us, including our trip to the Sweet 16 in 2008, so he has a great idea of the performance level that we expect in this program."
Â
McClure will work primarily with the Dukes' goalkeeping corps, which returns three players who started at least five matches in 2016--seniorÂ
Maggie Buxton and sophomoresÂ
Olivia Miller andÂ
Hannah McShea--while adding freshmanÂ
Emma Barefoot.
Â
The Dukes return six starters, including reigning CAA Rookie of the YearÂ
Haley Crawford, from their 2016 campaign, which saw them finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 5-4 mark in league play before falling to No. 2 Drexel in the CAA Semifinals, marking JMU's fourth straight appearance in the semis.
