Wendel Camargo is in his fourth season as a JMU volleyball assistant coach. Head coach Lauren Steinbrecher announced his hiring on June 5, 2014.
During his tenure at JMU, Camarago has helped the program to a 83-38 overall record and a 42-22 mark in the CAA. The Dukes have qualified for the CAA Championship each season and have won back-to-back CAA titles (2016, 2017) and advanced to the semifinals in 2014 and 2015.
Under Camargo's leadership the Dukes have won two consecutive CAA regular-season titles (2015, 2016) and back-to-back CAA titles (2016, 2017). In 2016, the Dukes made their first appearance in the CAA Championship match since 2002 when the Dukes knocked off No. 6 Delaware in straight sets to win the tournament title for the first time since 2000. JMU repeated as champions in 2017 after coming into the CAA tournament as a No. 3 seed and outlasted No. 6 Elon in a five set match before sweeping both No. 2 Towson and No. 1 Charleston. The Championship victory in 2017 was the fifth straight win for the Dukes and pushed their overall record to 23-5, the most wins by any JMU team since 1999. Camargo has also been apart of two NCAA Tournament appearances with the Dukes.
“I am fired up to announce the hiring of Wendel Camargo as our new assistant coach,” Steinbrecher said. “Wendel is a first-class coach that shares our passion for developing student-athletes on the and off the court. He brings a tremendous amount of experience and a unique skill set with his background in international volleyball. There is no doubt in my mind that Wendel will make an immediate positive impact in our program and I look forward to working with him for many years down the road.”
Camargo comes to JMU after serving two seasons as a volunteer assistant at the University of Kansas where he worked with the liberos and defensive specialists. He also assisted with in-office recruiting tasks and Data Volley entry while serving as the coordinator for Jayhawk Juniors. In his two seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks had over 1,900 digs in each season and averaged 15.9 digs per set. In 2013, KU finished the season ranked 13th in the RPI and was the No. 14 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the Quarterfinal Round and finished the year with a 25-8 record.
“I am very excited for this opportunity at JMU,” Camargo stated. “This is a great program and I am looking forward to working with Lauren and Casey. When I visited, the players were very nice and they made me feel even more confident that I want to work with this program. I have enjoyed my two years at Kansas and have accomplished some great things there. Now I am excited to move on and get the chance to accomplish great things with my new team.”
Prior to coaching in the United States, Camargo was a member of the coaching staff for the Dominican Republic National Team-Santo Domingo from 2009-12.
