Ty Phillips is nearing 12 years of service with the Dukes and currently serves as the assistant athletics director for facilities and events, a position to which he was promoted in July of 2012. Phillips oversees the day-to-day operations of athletics facilities including scheduling, maintenance and usage. He oversees the equipment room operations serving all 18 sports, event management and works closely with the director of athletics facilities and facilities management to ensure facilities are maintained and upgraded. He also assists in planning for capital construction.

Phillips has been heavily involved with the recent updates to Madison’s athletics facilities. He works closely with the facilities management and construction and engineering offices. Since spring of 2005, he has been involved with planning and opening of the following: Plecker Athletics Performance Center (2005, support building); Memorial Hall/Veterans Memorial Park (2009, baseball/softball); Bridgeforth Stadium (2011, football); short-game golf facility, University Park (2012, soccer/lacrosse/track & field/cross country). Additional improvements included resurfacing Bridgeforth Stadium, Field Hockey Complex, Veterans Memorial Park Softball Stadium, new playing court in basketball arena (Convocation Center), resurfacing Hillside Tennis Courts, locker room renovations for 14 sports and an indoor golf facility among many others.

He is involved with the Collegiate Event and Facilities Management Association and International Association of Venue Managers. He also has overseen the growth of the game operations for all sports, including enhancing the operation, transitioning of the event staff from volunteers to utilization of a professional staffing company and hosting numerous conference championships and NCAA postseason events.

Before his current position, Phillips held varying positions at JMU such as a graduate assistant (2002-03), part-time facilities and events coordinator (2003) and director of facilities and events from October 2003 to June 2012.

Phillips completed his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1996 from Radford and completed his master's degree in sport and recreation management at James Madison in 2003.
A native of Vesuvius, Virginia, Phillips and his wife, Tiffany, have two sons, Landon and Levi and one girl, Ellie, and reside currently reside in the Elkton area.
