Christine Shelton ('70) was a member of the JMU tennis, field hockey and basketball teams for four years. The number one singles player on the tennis team, she served as the team captain three years and twice qualified for the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association Championships. In field hockey, she was named to the Blue Ridge and Southeast teams and played in the U.S.F.H.A. National Tournament two years. She was selected an outstanding freshman, sophomore, junior and senior at JMU, was a class officer three years and served as president of the sophomore class. She was named to Who's Who and selected the outstanding senior physical education major. Following her graduation, she was a Peace Corps volunteer in Venezuela and a Peace Corps cross-cultural trainer. She has coached high school teams in field hockey, basketball, soccer, tennis and boys' tennis and college teams in tennis, men's tennis and men's and women's badminton. She holds a master's degree from JMU and coached the JMU tennis team for one year. She served as president of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport from 1984-86 and has served as chairman of the NAGWS Latin American Project since 1979. As chairman, she has initiated and directed conferences in the United States, Central America and South America. She has received federal grants in developing curriculum promoting non-sexist and non-racist teaching behaviors and is a consultant in the area of race and sex equity in education. She was selected JMU's outstanding alumna in 1986.
