Susan Shreckhise Slater ('83) earned Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-America honors in the 400-meter hurdles in 1981 and 1982 and was JMU's first female athlete to earn All-America honors in track. She finished fifth in the hurdles and ran on the Dukes' 400-meter relay team at the 1981 AIAW National Championships. She placed sixth in the hurdles and was a member of JMU's 11th-place mile relay team at the 1982 AIAW National Championships. In 1983, JMU's first year of Division I competition, she qualified for both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships. At the NCAA meets she placed 10th in the 600-meter dash indoors and 30th in the 400-meter hurdles outdoors.
Following graduation from JMU she continued to compete and qualified for and competed in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials in the hurdles. She placed 18th in the hurdles in the 1983 TAC National Championships.
In 1983 she was voted JMU's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. At one point in her JMU career she held eight individual school records and 12 relay records, and her school record of 59.44 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles still stands. She is listed on JMU's all-time top 10 lists in five individual events and four relays, and she holds nine of JMU's all-time top 10 times in the 400-meter hurdles.
She was the Virginia AIAW hurdles champion in 1980, 1981 and 1982 and the VAIAW 400-meter champion in 1981.
