Tim Lyle scored a career-high 23 points as JMU beat Long Island 91-60 to complete the pre-holiday portion of its schedule.
Lyle hit on eight of 10 shots, including a career-high four three-point field goals. Lyle played only 21 minutes, and he had only a three-point field goal during eight first-half minutes before scoring 20 points during the final half.
JMU led 38-30 at halftime, but Long Island was within 42-39 when Lyle hit on a layup at the 14:58 mark, starting a period during which he scored 15 points in just more than four minutes. He added a three-pointer with 14:05 to play for a 47-41 JMU lead and later had 10 straight JMU points as the Dukes raised the margin to 61-44 with 10:50 left.
Lyle led four JMU players in double figures in scoring.
Jabari Outtz added 21 points and eight assists,
David Fanning 13 points and eight assists, and
Rob Strickland 11 points.
JMU had a season-high 23 assists and a season-low seven turnovers while shooting a season-best 56.9 percent (37-65) from the field. The Dukes hadn't shot better than 48.1 percent from the field previously during the season and hadn't shot as well as 50 percent in any of their previous 12 games. JMU last had shot better than 56.9 percent during a 111-77 win over Liberty Dec. 2, 1998 (31 games previously).
Lyle's previous career scoring high had been 22 points in the 1998 game against Liberty. He had had only six three-pointers previously and had had as many as two in a game only once – in JMU's 68-66 victory at East Tennessee State earlier during the season.
JMU had a 38-26 rebounding advantage, and Long Island shot only 40.7 percent (22-54) and but 38.5 percent (10-26) during the second half.
Outtz tied his JMU career high for assists, and Fanning set a career assists high. Outtz hit on nine of 16 shots, Fanning on six of nine and Strickland on five of seven.
