Tim Lyle and Jarbari Outtz each hit on two free throws during the final 33 seconds as JMU held on to win its first Colonial Athletic Association home game of the season, 60-57 over East Carolina.
The Dukes led 56-44 after
Rob Strickland's field goal with 6:42 left but didn't score again until Lyle's two free throws with 0:33 remaining gave them a 58-55 lead. East Carolina's Garrett Blackwelder pulled the Pirates to within 58-57 by hitting on two of three free throws with 25 seconds left before Outtz hit twice from the foul line with six seconds to play for the final margin. Outtz's free throws came after Blackwelder was stripped of the ball by JMU's
Jamar Perry as he drove the lane.
Strickland had five points and Outtz four during a 9-0 scoring burst that allowed JMU to raise a 47-44 lead with 10:09 left to 56-44 with 6:42 remaining, but the Dukes didn't get another field goal. Blackwelder had a three-point field goal and hit on four free throws as East Carolina scored 11 straight points before Lyle's free throws with 33 seconds to play.
Outtz finished with 27 points and Strickland with 19, both JMU career highs. Outtz hit on eight of 13 shots from the field and Strickland on seven of 11. Outtz also had six assists and two steals and Strickland four blocked shots.
JMU shot only 41.3 percent (19-46) and East Carolina just 33.9 percent (21-62). East Carolina had a 44-32 rebounding edge.
Evaldes Jocys led East Carolina with 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Blackwelder added 12 points and Brandon Hawkins 10 points and seven rebounds.
