WASHINGTON, D.C. (1/2/2000) – Georgetown took a 16-point first-half lead and held off a second-half JMU rally to beat the Dukes 63-48 in the teams' first meeting since the 1981 NCAA Tournament.
After trailing 26-10 with five minutes left in the first half and 32-21 at halftime, JMU pulled to within 43-37 midway through the second half before a 15-6 scoring burst all but sealed the win for Georgetown.
JMU shot a season-low 28.8 percent (15-52) but got back into the game by hitting on four three-pointers during the first 8:14 of the second half. Georgetown then hit on three three-pointers during a three-minute period while pulling away.
Georgetown shot only 34.4 percent (22-64) but had a 53-33 rebounding edge. The Hoyas had 24 offensive rebounds and took advantage of 18 JMU turnovers, including 11 during the first half.
Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, Georgetown's 6-foot-11 center, was the game's top scorer (18) and rebounder (15). He had three blocked shots and three steals, and the Hoyas also got 16 points from Anthony Perry and 12 from Kevin Braswell. Braswell had eight points, including two three-pointers, during Georgetown's 15-6 scoring burst after JMU got to within 43-37.
Jabari Outtz had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead JMU.
Mickey Dennis was the Dukes' only other double-figure scorer with 12 points.
JMU hit on nine of 24 three-point tries but had only six two-point field goals.
JMU's 28.8 percent shooting effort was its poorest since shooting 25.0 percent in 1997-98 in a 73-42 loss at North Carolina Wilmington. Georgetown's 34.4 percent shooting mark was the second-poorest to date by a JMU foe during the 1999-2000 season.
