Pat Mitchell scored had a career-high 26 points,
David Fanning hit on five free throws during the final 33 seconds, and JMU rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit for a 69-66 victory.
The Dukes trailed by 12 points during the first half, 31-29 at halftime and 45-36 with 14:00 left before rallying behind Mitchell, who hit on 11 of 15 shots overall and had 19 second-half points. His field goal with 5:57 to play put JMU in front for the first time (55-54) and came during a period during which he scored 10 straight JMU points.
JMU's lead was 64-58 with 42 seconds left and 65-60 after Fanning hit on the first of a one-and one free throw chance with 33 seconds to play. Fanning added two free throws with 30.7 seconds left after LIU got to within 65-62 and two more with 4.5 seconds to play after the Blackbirds pulled to within 67-66.
JMU shot 53.6 percent (15-28) during the second half after shooting 37.5 percent (12-32) during the first half and had only five second-half turnovers after having 11 during the first half.
